This standard is applicable to mounted, trailed and self-propelled sprayers used in agriculture and horticulture. It specifies requirements and their verification for the design and performance of sprayers with regard to minimizing the potential risk of environmental contamination.
In addition, it specifies the requirements for identification of the sprayer and the minimum content of the instruction handbook.

Specific requirements for field crop sprayers are included in EN 12761-2:2001 and for air-assisted sprayers for bush and tree crops in EN 12761-3:2001.
This standard does not cover safety aspects which are dealt with in EN 907.
